ITS Arizona holds its annual conference October 7-8 at the Mesa Convention Center,
Building C, under the theme "Empowering Innovation - Then and Now." The chapter numbers
this the 33rd edition. Day one pairs a half-day technical workshop with an evening
reception, and day two carries the technical sessions on ITS planning, deployment and
research from Arizona agencies, practitioners and university researchers.

## Why it matters for the data layer

Arizona runs an active state ITS program, and this conference is where ADOT and the
Valley cities describe the systems they are putting in the field and what they do with
the data those systems produce. Maricopa County DOT, Phoenix-area city traffic engineers
and MAG regional planners all present here, so a single day gets you the deployment side
and the regional planning side of the same networks.

The university research on the program is worth attention for a different reason. It is
usually a year or two ahead of what shows up in an agency specification, and Arizona's
researchers work on the corridors their audience operates.
